About us

We have become the largest Trust in the North West providing mental health, learning disabilities and community services.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Mersey Care. Mental and physical health and wellbeing is our core business.

Mersey Care successfully became an NHS Foundation Trust in May 2016, mainly as a mental health trust. Since then we have expanded our services through a number of transactions:

  • Providing mainly specialist forensic learning disability services by acquiring Calderstones Partnership NHS FT (from June 2016)
  • Providing local community
physical health services for South Sefton (from July 2017) and then Liverpool (from April 2018), as well as mental health services to HMP Liverpool (from April 2018)
  • Providing local community physical health services for Southport and Formby (from April 2021)
  • Providing a range of local community physical, mental health / learning disability services and forensic services for Halton, Knowsley, St Helens and Warrington by acquiring North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS FT (June 2021).

In 2023, the CQC rated us ‘good’ overall and ‘outstanding’ for well led and caring.

We have also won, amongst many others, the National Patient Safety Awards prize for Changing Culture.

We are committed to providing perfect care. As part of this we support our staff to do the best job they can and work alongside patients, service users and carers to design and develop future services together.

Building on what we have learned, alongside feedback about what matters most to our staff, patients, service users and their families, we want to refresh our focus to improve the overall quality and experiences of our staff and the many different communities we serve.

Our aim is to play a full part in the health and social care economies we serve, by promoting and driving greater integration between mental and physical health and social care.
